THE STORY OF THE FOUNDATION
1964 THE FIRST EXHIBITIONS AFTER PIERO’S DEATH
The artist’s first solo shows following his death were held in Brussels and Milan, while his work also featured in various group shows including Pittura a Milano dal 1945 al 1964 at Milan’s Palazzo Reale.
In Brussels, the exhibition Hommage à Piero Manzoni was held at Galerie Smith, the setting for the last solo show in the artist’s lifetime which had opened on 25 January 1963. In Milan instead the exhibition was held at the Schwarz gallery. For the occasion a brief manifesto was published with phrases from friends and acquaintances of the artist: Lucio Fontana wrote “Manzoni’s Line is the end of art”, while the printer of Azimuth and friend of the artist Antonio Maschera declared, “He is the first of our new generation to have found a new alphabet. […] The respect that binds men goes beyond the brief dialogue of life”.
